Elene B. Sartell (Stokes)

June 17, 1920 — December 30, 2018

Elene Brigham Sartell, 98, of Exeter, PA, and formerly of Berlin, VT, passed peacefully at home on Sunday, December 30, 2018, with her family at her side.

A native of Vermont, she was born to the late Adelbert and Ruby Stokes on June 17, 1920 in Hinesburg, VT. She attended Hinesburg Elementary and High School and then went onto attend Johnson Normal School from 1937 to 1939 and continued her education graduating in 1966 from Johnson State College. She furthered her graduate work at Goddard College and University of Vermont.

She started her teaching career in 1939 in a one room school in Walden, VT. She also taught in several other school and retired after many years at Berlin Elementary School in 1982.

She was married to Chandler Blake Brigham in 1940 until his passing in 1959. In 1989, she married Lloyd Sartell, who passed in 2006. In 2009, she moved to PA to live with her oldest daughter Terry Stockton.

She was very involved in the Vermont Quilters Guild for many years and traveled to Europe for the 1st International Quilt Show in Salzburg, Austria.

She pursued a love of reading, crossword puzzles and Suduko. She also very much enjoyed music, gardening, dancing, dominoes, sewing and working with young people. She enjoyed teaching her granddaughters, Jean Jones and Kathryn Lagerstedt how to sew and quilt. She was a very loving teacher with a rocking chair in her classroom where she rocked and held many, many young children.

She was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Berlin, VT, and was affiliated with St. Gabriel's Church in Douglassville, PA.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Channa-Lee Brigham in 2008, her first husband Chandler Brigham in 1959 and her second husband Lloyd Sartell in 2006.

She is survived by her daughters Terry-Dayle Stockton widow of John of Exeter, PA, Cathy-Lynne Brimblecombe and her husband Kenneth of Berlin, Vermont and Julie-Anne Clemons of Montpelier, Vermont. She is also survived by her grandchildren Lee (Annie) Dupere, John Dupere, Jean Dodson Jones (Neil), John Dodson (Patricia), Chandler Clemons (Lauren), Kathryn Lagerstedt (Marty); great grandchildren Maxwell, Benjamin and Sidney Dodson, Lucas and Nolan Jones, Kayla Mayo (Harvey), Bradley Dupere, Olivia Dupere, Ann Blake Clemons and Grace Emily Lagerstedt; and one great-great grandchild Kasey.

Visitation with friends and family will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with services beginning at 11:00 am in St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, 1188 Benjamin Franklin Hwy., Douglassville, PA 19518. A memorial service will also be celebrated in the spring at Berlin Congregational Church in Berlin, VT. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to either 1st Congregational Church of Berlin, Scott Hill Road, Berlin, VT 05602 or to St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church at the address above.
