With profound sadness, we share the passing of Russell J. Smith Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Reading Hospital, at the age of 71.

Russell found joy in the simple pleasures of life, and few things brought him more peace than time spent by the ocean. Cape May, New Jersey and Bar Harbor, Maine being at the top of his list.

Russell was the devoted husband of Richard M. Knerr, with whom he shared 26 wonderful years. Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of the late Edward C. Smith and Nancy F. (Labezius) Smith. He attended J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster. Russell dedicated 24 years of his career to Armstrong World Industries, working in manufacturing, and later served as Manufacturing Supervisor at Precision Medical Products in Denver, PA for a decade. His work ethic and leadership left a lasting impression on all who worked with him. He is survived by his husband, Richard, and his three sons: Russell J. Smith Jr. (wife Becky), Cory M. Smith, and Timothy M. Smith (wife Jennie). He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. Russell is also survived by his siblings: Ray McDowell, Paul McDowell, Edward C. Smith Jr., Ava Nunn, and Crissy Warner. He was preceded in death by his brothers Rodney McDowell and Jeffrey D. Smith.

Russell will be remembered for his unwavering love, quiet strength, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends.
