Obituary

Myron Dent Hughes was born in Cincinnati, Ohio at The Christ Hospital on September 13, 1943. He was the son of Myron Austin Hughes and Dorothy Louise Dent. He graduated from Withrow High School in 1961. He continued his education at Ohio University where in 1965, he earned a Bachelor's of Science in Zoology and a teaching certificate. Upon graduation he taught Natural Sciences at Hughes and Sawyer High Schools. In that same year he married Margaret Elaine Snow in Oxford, Ohio on July 3, 1965. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Their union produced two daughters, Heidi and Monica. In 1972, Myron became Director of the Upward Bound Program at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Upward Bound was a program that served underprivileged youth and helped them achieve the skills needed to attend and be successful in college. He helped change the trajectory of hundreds of lives. During his time at UC, he earned his Masters of Educational Administration and was an instructor of Biological Sciences through their University College. He taught numerous classes including Biology, Botany, and Medical terminology while also being responsible for the Upward Bound Program.

After 25 years of service at the University of Cincinnati, he retired and followed his wife to her new job in Douglassville, Pennsylvania. There, he returned to his first professional love, teaching high school science. At Boyertown Area School District he was curriculum lead and taught various levels of biology until his retirement.

Mike enjoyed being active and was extremely competitive in activities including chess, basketball, ping-pong, racquetball, bowling and pickleball. He and Elaine retired as snowbirds to Solivita in Kissimmee, Florida where Mike continued his active nature. Participating in bowling, pickleball, choir, and a Mentor program, Mike and Elaine made many memories and friends. After many enjoyable years in Solivita they returned back to Pennsylvania to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren.

Myron transitioned on July 12, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Elaine, His sister Marilyn Hughes Gaston (Gayle), two daughters, Heidi Hughes (Scott) and Monica Morin (Joe), three grandchildren (McKenna, Zoe, and Ethan), almost-grandson Drew, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 10:00 am at St. Catharine of Siena R.C.C., 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA 19606. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church memorial fund at the above address. Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., has been entrusted with arrangements.
