Obituary

Marilyn Jean Miller, 86, of Reading, passed away on Sunday February 8, 2026, at Complete Care at Berkshire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident since August 2025. Born in Reading, PA, she was the daughter of Alton Leon Boyer and Fern Arlene (LaFaver) Boyer. She graduated from Reading High School in 1957 and received her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the Reading-Muhlenberg Technical School in 1975.

Jean worked as a secretary at various firms, including Reading Regional Airport, before finding her true calling in nursing. She cared for patients on medical/surgical floors at several hospitals but spent most of her career at Reading Hospital where she eventually moved to the Emergency Department, because she wanted a faster paced environment to be able to help more people. The team in the ER gave her that challenge, and she soon had a second family with her fellow caregivers.

Jean's commitment to caring was a central part of her family life. A dedicated daughter, sister, mother and spouse, Jean would drop whatever she was doing to help whoever she could. She learned to cook PA Dutch favorites at her mother's side, and it was not uncommon to find Jean rolling out dough for her homemade pot pie. She was the life of every party, and Jean's holiday parties were legendary. She was the "cool mom" of the neighborhood, and you would often find many kids hanging around the house...and staying for dinner!

Jean loved her pets like family and had many fur babies over the years including Sabrina her beautiful white Belgian shepherd, Shultz the "Heinz 57" rescue dog, and Cuddles, her beloved Bichon Frise.

In retirement, she and Roy, her long-time companion, frequently traveled-whether on aimless Sunday drives, visiting New England or Atlantic City, or taking many trips to their favorite city, Montreal-making friends wherever they went. A favorite activity was her monthly "Lunch Bunch" gatherings with friends, some from childhood and some newly made. A certified "shopaholic", Jean would spend hours with her daughter Cindy browsing at Boscov's for bargains.

Jean is survived by her son Jeffrey Allyn Yoder, husband of Alicia, brother Ronald Boyer, husband of Nancy, brother Donald Boyer, husband of Sue, along with grandchildren Joshua Allyn Yoder, partner of Kali Hassinger, Kathryn Lynn Yoder, Olivia Jane de la Torre-Yoder, and Stephen Douglas Paul, partner of Maddy Feinauer. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Jean was pre-deceased by her daughter Cynthia Lynne (Yoder) Paul and her husband Jeffrey S. Paul, her brother Barry T. Boyer, and LeRoy Martz, Jean's long-time companion.

The family would like to thank Maddie, Heidi and all the team at Complete Care and Eden, Mary, Erica and all the team of Caring Hospice for taking such loving care of Mom in her final months.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on February 17, 2026 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with services beginning at 11:00 am at Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. 2100 Perkiomen Avenue Reading, PA 19606. Interment will follow at Laureldale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, 58 Kennel Road Birdsboro PA 19508.
