What
is the history of Cremation?
Cremation
dates back to the Stone Age, and it was very common throughout human history.
However, in the early Christian era Cremation declined in the West. Early
Christians preferred earth burial. Interest in Cremation was revived in
the Western world in the late 1800's.
If
I choose Cremation, can I also have a funeral or memorial service?
Absolutely.
Many people who choose Cremation hold some form of religious service.
Some choose a funeral service with the casket present. Others might have
a memorial service, either prior to or following the Cremation. Most psychologists
and grief counselors advise that these services are healing for the bereaved
family and friends.
Can
I have a viewing?
Yes.
Cremation may follow a traditional funeral service with visitation, viewing,
and a service with an open or closed casket.
Is
embalming necessary?
Embalming
disinfects and preserves a body for a limited period of time. When there
is a viewing with visitation or funeral services with the body present,
embalming is essential. Health reasons, legal issues or religious customs
may also make embalming desirable or necessary.
