Doris Stapleton

Doris S. Stapleton, 88, of Reiffton, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016 in her residence. She was the widow of F. Eugene Stapleton who passed away in 1998. Born in West Reading, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Margaret (Hertzog) Schaeffer. Doris was a graduate of Reading High School in 1946, Penn State University in 1975 with an Associate Degree in Letters, Arts and Science, Alvernia University in 1980 with a B.A. in Social Work and Kutztown Univeristy in 1986 with a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing. Doris served as the Treasurer of the board for both the Mount Penn Jr. Women's Club and the Women's Club of Reiffton. She served on the board of directors of the YWCA on Executive Committee as the Treasurer, Membership Chairperson, Finance Chairperson, Executive Nominating and Festival of Nations and the Advisory Board. Doris was on the board of the Women's Committee for the Reading Symphony Orchestra where she served as the Orchestra Hospitality Chairperson, Volunteer Coordinator and Finance Chairperson. She was also on the Board for the Literacy Council of Reading and Berks County and was a tutor for English as a second language with concentration on Vietnamese refugees and was a participating member of the American Counseling Association since 1980. Doris was a counselor for Berks County Children and Youth Services, Women's Counseling Center of Reading/Berks County and Family Life Services at Topton Lutheran Home, all for several years. She is survived by one son, Thomas Stapleton husband of Margaret of Palmyra and one granddaughter, Zoey. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Jean Boyce of Bedford, MA. She was pre-deceased by a son, Peter Stapleton and her brother, Richard Schaeffer. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 19, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. in Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610. Internment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Opportunity House, 430 N. 2nd Street, P.O. Box 12303, Reading, Pennsylvania 19612-2303. Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. Mount Penn in charge of arrangements.
