Leonard Gromis

Leonard “Pat” R. Gromis, 91, of Lower Alsace Township, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 12, 2015 in the Wyomissing Health and Rehabilitation Center, Reading, where he resided since September 2, 2015. He leaves his wife of 68 years, Joyce (Fidler) Gromis. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Paul J. and Florence (Steffy) Gromis. He was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School; taking on the role of their head drum major. Pat was a United States Marine Corps Veteran of World War II, serving his country honorably at the Battle of Peleliu. He was awarded his Purple Heart in 2005. He was a member of Trinity U.C.C.-Mount Penn, a lifetime member of the Lions Club, and served as past president and board member of the Antietam Pool. Pat worked for the United States Postal Service and was then the manager of Industrial Abrasives. He was an avid tennis player and golfer. Pat and his wife enjoyed playing all kinds of card games with dear friends and relatives. Pat was also fondly known as the game leader whether it was at family picnics, postal auxiliary get-togethers, or block parties; as well as “coach” and biggest fan of any and every youth sports team. Pat especially loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In addition to his wife, Pat is survived by: One son, Carey of Torrance, California, husband of Cheryl; one daughter, Holly, wife of Michael Rhodes of Lower Alsace Township; six grandchildren: Matthew Rhodes, husband of Laura of Exeter Township, Shannon Rhodes of Mt. Penn, Bethany of Torrance, California, Benjamin of DuPont, Washington, Jonathan of Lomita, California, Johanna of Torrance, California; and one great-granddaughter, Ryan Rhodes of Reading. He was pre-deceased by his brothers: Donald, during World War II, Robert and Allen, as well as his sister, Doris Hauser. Visitation with family and friends will be held at 10 a.m., with services beginning at 11 a.m. in Trinity U.C.C., 2449 Cumberland Ave., Mount Penn, PA 19606 on Friday, September 18, 2015. Interment in Forest Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity U.C.C. at the above-stated address.
